Pain management
Pain is a common barrier to enjoying full health. Whether
it is pain from a sporting injury, accident or due to an
underlying illness such as osteoporosis, pain can
be debilitating.
Perhaps the most important factor in recovering from pain and injury is timely treatment.
When pain is treated early the initial swelling can often be relieved and the healing process can begin straight away.
People often think of massage or physio treatment first but these can in fact inflame an acute injury leading to more pain and longer healing time. Acupuncture, however, does not further disrupt the injury site.
If there is a tear to a muscle or fracture in a bone there is no
instant fix. However, even in these cases it may be possible
to speed up the recovery time and reduce the pain and
suffering that result.
Acupuncture in the acute stage (just after the injury) can
often be performed at points some distance from the site of the injury. In my experience of emergency acupuncture (emergency department of the Northern Hospital in Melbourne), these 'distal points' work very well.
Acupuncture can also be used for chronic pain and long
term injuries. If your Western medicine doctor is
suggesting surgery, I would suggest you consult a Chinese
medicine doctor to make sure that there is not something
that could be done to either avoid surgery or aid in post-
operative recovery.
