Elements of Chinese Medicine

There are a number of modalities that constitute Chinese medicine.

-acupuncture
Perhaps the most familiar element of Chinese medicine is acupuncture. This is the process of inserting hair fine, sterile, single use needles into specific points to instigate a physiological response in the body. Chinese medicine theory explains in detail the functions of specific acupuncture points and a doctor of Chinese medicine is trained to select points specific to the condition of the individual patient.

-moxabustion
This is an important part of acupuncture. A small amount of specific herb is burnt slowly on the end of an acupuncture needle providing a controlled, gentle warmth deep into the acupuncture site. This is particularly effective for, but not limited to, arthritis, musculoskeletal conditions and period pain.

-herbal medicine
The Chinese materia medica incorporates many hundreds of herbs that have been tested and used over thousands of years. They include common everyday herbs that you may find in your garden such as ginger or peppermint, as well as herbs that are mineral or animal in origin.

With proper training herbal medicine is both safe and effective. In general there are a lower number of side effects than from conventional drug therapy.

-diet therapy
Nutrition and diet plays a vital part in a patient's recovery and ongoing health. A doctor of Chinese medicine may provide appropriate advice on diet to aid the treatment plan. In China herbal medicine grew out of cooking. The Chinese say that good health begins with what we eat and that translates well into the English concept of 'you are what you eat'.
Chinese medicine views nutrition from both a western and Chinese traditional basis.

-tuina
Massage may form an important part of Chinese medicine treatment. Often used in conjunction with acupuncture and herbal medicine it is especially useful in musculoskeletal conditions. There is also a special branch of tuina used for infants. Many infantile conditions can be treated in this way including reflux, diarrhea, vomiting, fever and pain. These techniques can often be taught to parents to be used at home for simple conditions.
